The anti-cancer lifestyle plan

This article touched my heart especially after discovering that men can have breast cancer too. Not only can they have breast cancer but it can kill them faster than women. I suppose its up to individuals to take it upon themselves to prevent themselves against any disease.
13 tips to help you reduce your risk

Recent research shows that up to 90% of cancers are caused by environmental factors, according to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). The World Cancer Research Fund says about that 40% of them could be prevented by lifestyle changes. You can make changes to your daily routine to make sure that you are not a target for cancer.

1 GET A DAILY DOSE OF ANTI-OXIDANTS

Anti-oxidants can prevent cancer. They are nutrients and enzymes that clean up the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are chemicals that can attack your body’s tissue and cause cancer. Food rich in these anti-oxidants include carrots, tomatoes, spinach, peppers, and broccoli. Vitamin C is also an anti-oxidant, and it is found in oranges and naartjies. Eating a five portions of fresh fruits and vegetables a day is an important part of the anti-cancer lifestyle plan.

2 WATCH YOUR WEIGHT

Women who gain 9,5 to 13,5 kg after the age of 18 are 40% more likely to develop breast cancer than women who gain 2,5 kg or less according to research. This is because when a woman has more body fat, it increases her oestrogen levels. This increases her risk of developing cancer especially after menopause.

3 GET MOVING

Exercise reduces your chances of becoming overweight. It can also decrease your risk of getting breast cancer by up to 20%, according to research. People, especially women, who exercise regularly have less body fat. This reduces oestrogen levels and other potential cancer-producing hormones. Just 30 minutes of walking, three times a week is enough to make an important difference.

4 GET MORE VITAMIN E IN YOUR DIET

Everybody needs vitamin E, which is another anti-oxidant. Foods rich in vitamin E include oats, green vegetables, egg yolks, nuts, seeds and lentils. Almonds are a good source of the anti-oxidant vitamin E. A single daily serving could cut your risk of bladder cancer by 40% according to a recent study. Other good sources of vitamin E are wheat germ, cabbage and sunflower seeds.

5 BOOST YOUR IODINE INTAKE

Iodine is an important trace element (found naturally in the body). It prevents thyroid problems. Hypothyroidism (under activity of the thyroid gland, causing tiredness, cramps and weight gain) and lack of iodine have been linked to breast cancer in numerous studies. Good sources of natural iodine include fresh-water fish, kelp and eggs. Consult your doctor or nutritionist before deciding to take a 150mcg supplement of iodine. Remember that iodine is poisonous in large doses.

6 DRINK MORE GREEN TEA

Green tea contains phenols. These protect us against free radical damage, as do anti-oxidants. Green tea also gives you more energy as it does not contain caffeine, that can drain the body of its natural energy.

7 SOYA CAN DO YOUR BODY GOOD

Soya is a phyto-oestrogen (oestrogen that comes from the plant). A high level of human hormones, like oestrogen, can cause certain cancers, like breast cancer. When oestrogen attaches itself to breast tissue, it can increase cell division making cancer start. However, when soy phyto-oestrogen join breast tissue, they replace your own oestrogen. This stops it from causing further growth. More dense (thicker) breast tissue has been linked to greater risk of breast cancer. In China and Japan, where women eat more soya and oily fish, breast cancer has not been found in research.

MOVE TIP! Try using soy milk instead of cow milk, and substitute soya bean curd in your stir fries instead of oil.

8 GARLIC OFFERS PROTECTION

Garlic contains natural compound called allyl sulphur, which can block carcinogens (substances that causes cancer) from reaching their targets and destroy cancer cells. Allyl sulphur makes cancer cells harmless. Fresh garlic is always better than a tablet as it is always stronger. Try adding a tiny bulb of fresh garlic to your salads, vegetables dishes or stir fries. However, overdosing on garlic can give you side effects such as stomach cramps.

9 AVOID ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS

That every day can of cooldrink might be very dangerous. Several studies have linked chemicals aspartame and saccharin found in artificial sweetners to tumors. But this link has been fully proved. Nevertheless, there are more healthy natural alternatives to cooldrinks such as fruit juice and water.

10 GO ORGANIC

Organic fruits and vegetables are grown without any man-made chemicals being used to kill pests ( which can cause cancer). Animals are reared so that their organic meats are produced without added hormones (which can boost oestrogen levels). These toxins can cause tumors over time. The nutritional content of organic foods is higher however organic foods are more expensive and are not found in every supermarket. If more retail shops supported organic food, then the cost would come down for the ordinary person.

11 STOP SMOKING

Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer, as well as mouth, throat, oesophagus and bladder cancer. Stopping smoking reduces your risk of developing cancer soon after you stop – but the message is stop now!”

12 USE NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS

There are more than 50 known carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) in popular household products. Try to avoid them and go back to the natural cleaners that your grandmother would have used. Baking soda, distilled white vinegar and lemon juice will deal with many household stains.

13 WATCH THAT REFILL!

Alcohol raises oestrogen levels, especially in post-menopausal women. This can start in normal breast cancer cells making them cancerous. Alcohol stops the positive effects of folic acids in your diet found in eggs, cheese and milk. “The war on cancer can be won if humans maintained a healthy body weight through balanced diet and exercise.

Diabetes running in the family

Is diabetes running in your family? For some reason most of  the so called "lifestyle diseases" are hereditary too. With so much information at our disposal these days some of us should not be prone to them. It is always important to find out the health history of your family and the cause. Some people are not so lucky because they inherit these illnesses at young age but others still have a chance to salvage themselves, particularly by committing to healthy eating to alleviate the symptoms.

With sugar diabetes history in the family chances are if it did not attack all or some of the children in the family at an early age, beyond the age of 40 it might. The main reason being that beyond that age most people start putting more weight especially around the waist. Exercising can only help to some extent. It is quite imperative for one to start some form of prevention early in the years and if possible never deviate.

Here are the symptoms to look out for:

Diabetes Mellitus is evidenced by an exaggerated need to urinate (10 or more times a day). In this way, the excess sugar is expelled.
The person becomes irritable, fatigued, weak and exhausted, in addition to hungry (polyphagia), and feels a compulsive need to consume sugar.

Polydipsia extreme is also present.

Glucosuria is when the sugar concentration is elevated and can’t be filtered by the kidneys, it passes into the urine giving it an odor of maple sugar. The level of sugar in the blood in which
Glucosuria, or sugar in the urine, appears is 180m, per 100ml.
Centonuria is when acetone is found in the urine, giving a strong odor of acetone in the urine and mouth. Centonuria together with glucosuria (acetone + sugar = diabetic cetoacidosis) can cause a diabetic coma.

The formation of skin ulcers and gangrene in the extremities of chronically sick are produced by a failure in the blood supply due to arteriosclerosis and hypertension in these parts of the body. When these symptoms become chronic they may have serious consequences. If gone unnoticed, the toes, then the legs will be infected with gangrene and might need amputation. Vision is affected by chronic diabetes without any symptoms present in the beginning. Glaucoma (high pressure in the eyeball) can occur, partial separation of the retina, hemorrhages, micro-aneurysms (inflatable arteries) and cataracts. Diabetes is the main cause of blindness in adults.

Unfortunately, our diet these days does not contain the kind of vitamins and minerals necessary for the alleviation of symptoms causing these illnesses. Most people have either reverted to cooking with oil or perhaps buy fast foods, and besides most of our are foodstuff contains too much chemicals which we do not know the side effects thereof.

A dosage of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals is very important to clean our bodies of all the toxins we consume in our food or even through inhaling the contaminated air.

One effort a day could make a huge difference in alleviating symptoms or perhaps keep the illness at bay and it all should start today for tomorrow may be too late.
