At the UN Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases in September member countries of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) took the decision to put global cancer burden on the UN’s agenda by getting a million people to sign a declaration against cancer.
The UICC is the leading non-governmental organization dedicated exclusively to global cancer control and hopes to achieve 11 targets by 2020, including significant drops in global tobacco consumption, universal vaccination programmes for hepatitis B and the human papilloma virus, universal availability of effective pain medication.
Cansa, CEO Sue van Rensburg said the declaration, launched in 2006 and revised in 2008, is a call to action to take immediate steps to reduce the global cancer burden by 2020. “More than ever before there is a need for a concerted and co-ordinated fight against cancer.”
