Obesity taking a toll in South Africa

A recent research has shown that 61% of South Africans are overweight.
A survey done by GlaxoSmithKline found that Cape Town is the worst with 72% of those surveyed overweight, obese or morbidly obese. This is followed by Pretoria with 68%, Johannesburg 59% and Durban 52%.

People are considered overweight when their body mass index – statistical measure of body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres square - ranges between 25kg/m2 and 30kg/m2, obese when this is more than 30kg/m2 and morbidly obese when it is more than 40kg/m2.

About 500 people were interviewed. It was found that 60% of obese and 62% of morbidly obese people considered themselves to be merely overweight; 49% South Africans did not exercise; 71% had never dieted; and that lifestyle, food, poverty and demographics played a role in weight size. A total of 65% said healthy food was too expensive than unhealthy food; 39% looked at costs when purchasing food; and 87% ate a home-cooked dinner. - Sapa
